Primordial Serpent and Sun Boat

Oil on canvas. 25 x 25cm. 1990

This painting represents the eternal battle between the forces of light and dark, order and chaos. Each morning the serpent, Apophis, tries to stop the sun from rising into the sky, but he is beaten back by the jackal-headed Wepwawet, the Opener of the Way, so that Ra can sail across the sky and illuminate the earth. When the sun sets at the end of the day, the boat sails through the darkness of the underworld, to once again encounter Apophis as it is about to rise in the east.

The boat carrying the sun is placed on the symbol for the sky. The serpent swims in the primordial ocean. There are numerous examples of the sun in a boat such as in the Papyrus uf Nu.
