Artwork - 2011

Early in the year I worked on a series of the Leaf woodcut which I printed to make an edition of ten books, each containing 19 prints including the endpapers. Some prints have up to 3 or 4 layers of colour, which makes a total of 360 runs through the press. It took me a few months to complete the prints and bind the books. Below are some of the prints.

Leaves of Gold - & green & blue & orange & silver... (13 x 13 cm).

...and the first completed book.

All ten books.

A few linocuts (15 x 15 cm).

“Maieutic: to bring forth latent ideas into clear consciousness.”

From the Australian concise oxford dictionary:
Maieutic: (Of Socratic mode of enquiry) serving to bring out a person’s latent ideas into clear consciousness. [from Greek maieutikos – act as midwife]

From Wikipedia: Maieutics (pronounced maɪˈjuːtɪks) is a pedagogical method based on the idea that the truth is latent in the mind of every human being due to innate reason but has to be "given birth" by answering intelligently proposed questions (or problems).

I was first attracted to the sound of the word and the profusion of vowels. Then the source of the word made it doubly interesting. Socrates describes himself as a midwife in Plato’s “Theaetetus”.

I used this word in a digital image a few years ago. Decided to use the image for a linocut to see how small I could cut the words.

Testing a blended solid colour background for the tree print.

"The Wind in the Trees" - Linocut. 15 x 15 cm.

This is the first stage of a reduction linocut. First time I’ve used the reduction method so keeping it simple. Two more layers to go.
I should mention that I use letterpress ink, which gives a rich sheen to the prints.
However, several layers of ink takes a long time to dry thoroughly.

The next print was printed with the second stage of the block. (I had also printed an all over blended background colour on this one.)

The third stage of the block.

There are seven different colour variations of the print, in editions of five each.

I made a clamshell box in which to store the prints.

The press that I am using is actually an old mangle.
